Pacific Building Systems (PBS) began constructing luxury homes in Fiji in 1991. The company quickly learned that building in the islands presented some unique challenges mostly related to difficult and remote building sites, unpredictable weather patterns and the lack of suitably skilled and experienced tradesmen. In addition, finding and working with reliable subcontractors who understood and could meet the work quality expectations of high-end home owners was also a major challenge.

The company decided that the only real solution to these problems was to take control of as much of the building process as possible by bringing it in-house and opening up a one-stop construction shop. To this end, PBS acquired a large workshop in Suva, Fiji’s capital city, where it took control of its own destiny and could meet the demands of its clients.

Solving its problems in this way resulted in the company being unexpectedly inundated with work from resorts in and around Fiji because they too faced many of the same challenges experienced by luxury home owners. As a natural consequence, and on the back of the tourism boom, PBS quickly became the South Pacific’s leading resort builder having taken on and built over $100,000,000 worth of resort work in the last two years alone.

Today, the company boasts a 3,000m² covered workshop and office space which serves as the company’s headquarters. At this location, PBS employs approximately 150 trades people and administrative personnel to support another 1,100 employees in the field.

This facility in Suva houses the company’s:

• steel fabrication workshop,
• timber machining bay,
• joinery and cabinetry plant,
• art department,
• spray and finishes booth,
• thatch treatment plant; and
• computerized timber wall frame & truss shop.

One of the keys to PBS’ rapid growth and quality construction is this horizontally integrated approach to building provided by its Suva based workshop. It is there where the company is able to precut, fabricate, assemble and finish many of the components that go into building a luxury home or resort including roof trusses, floors, doors, windows and cabinetry. The goal is to provide quality controlled materials prepared in a predictable environment to a local or remote job site in the most efficient manner possible. The pay off comes in the form of time savings, less waste, lower costs including freight and a higher quality end product all resulting in a more pleasant building experience for PBS and its clients.
